South Korea’s Hankook Tire confirmed a major fire at its main Daejeon production facility, located about 100 miles (160km) south of the capital city Seoul, has not affected any of its production lines.

The fire broke out on Tuesday evening at the facility’s main warehouse and was eventually extinguished on Wednesday morning. One-fifth of the warehouse and around 180,000 tyres went up in smoke.

No injuries were reported, as most employees had left for the day, and initial estimates put the cost of the damage at around USD6.5m. The causes of the fire are yet to be determined.

Hankook’s Daejeon and the nearby Geumsan plant have a combined annual production capacity of 48m car tyres, around half of the company’s expected global output this year.
