South African new vehicles sales rose 5.6% to 57,617 units in September compared to the same month a year ago, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers said.
Year to date sales were 484,152 at the end of September compared with 418,020 a year previously.
New passenger car sales of 37,791 last month were lower than the 39,203 in August.
Light commercial models accounted for 16,607 registrations.
Toyota topped the charts last month with 12,711 sales followed by Volkswagen (10,797), General Motors SA (7,867), Ford (7,288) and DaimlerChrysler (4,389).
