Daimler is to invest ZAR2bn (US$290.6m) at its Mercedes-Benz plant in South Africa in readiness to assemble the next-generation C-Class slated for introduction in 2014.

The South African plant in East London will be one of four production sites where the car will be built, with others in Germany, China and the US.

“We have had immense success in South Africa with the C-Class and we have exported to left-hand drive markets since 1998 and to right-hand drive markets since 2000,” said Mercedes-Benz South Africa chief executive Hansgeorg Niefer.

He added the company recently exported the 100,000th C-Class built in East London and in the first quarter of next year the plant is expected to reach the half-million mark for production of the C-Class since 1994.
