South Korean copper foil producer Solus Advanced Materials Company announced this week that it has started mass production at a second copper foil plant in Hungary, as the company continues to position itself as a key player in Europe’s electric vehicle (EV) battery supply chain.
Solus Advanced Materials is a leading global producer of EV battery copper foil, supplying manufacturers such as LG Energy Solution and Tesla. The company claims to be the only producer of battery copper foil in Europe and is set to become the first producer in North America when it completes construction of a new plant in Quebec, Canada. Having production facilities in major regions allow the company to respond quickly to the requirements of local battery manufacturers.

Battery foil is a key material used in electric vehicle batteries, helping to increase battery density and the mileage of battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The company produces copper foil with a thickness of 6 micrometers and has recently been able to reduce this to 4.5 micrometers.
The new Hungarian plant, located near its existing facility in Tatabánya, has a production capacity of 23,000 tons of copper foil per year – increasing the company’s overall production capacity in the country to 38,000 tons—enough for 1.5 million BEV batteries. A third plant in Hungary is also in the planning, which would give the company an annual production capacity in the region of 100,000 tons, according to reports.
The Quebec plant is scheduled to be completed in 2026, with a production capacity of 25,000 tons of copper foil per year, which will be increased to 63,000 tons later on.
Solus Advanced Materials’ CEO, Kwak Geun-man, said in a statement: “With the commencement of mass production at the second Hungarian plant, we have expanded our production capacity, enabling more aggressive local market penetration.” He pointed out that the second plant not only increases the company’s capacity but also improves its ability to respond to the specific requirements of battery manufacturers and automakers.
