Skoda has launched an online-based voice control system for its Kamiq crossover and Scala brands.

The ‘Hey, Laura’ function understands natural speech in six languages, according to the Volkswagen Group subsidiary and forms part of the Amundsen infotainment system available for the Kamiq and Scala.

Laura supports English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Czech and can understand different dialects if required.

Available functions at launch include the ability to change radio stations, search for POIs using the native satellite navigation system and phone calls.

Skoda’s in-car digital assistant uses the vehicle’s on-board eSIM to connect to the internet and Skoda says the system will be enhanced with further functionality along with mobile and web apps.

The Skoda Kamiq and Scala are due to arrive in Australia during the first half of 2020, although the company’s local division has indicated the ‘Hey Laura’ function may not be available as it does not plan to offer eSIM functionality.

“It is unlikely as the feature requires car connectivity via a SIM, which we currently do not plan to introduce,” said Skoda Australia PR manager, Kurt McGuinness.
