Singapore has officially opened the CETRAN (Centre of Excellence for Test and Research of Automomous Vehicles) dedicated to the development of self driving technology.

The SGD3.6m (US$2.7m), two hectare facility was funded by the Ministry of Transport Land Transport Authority and involves state owned infrastructure technology company JTC Corporation and the local Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

It is located in the Jurong district and is part of a new 600 hectare technology development area which will host a number of new technology development programmes including advanced manufacturing, robotics and urban 'solutions'.

The new facility is managed by the NTU and features a test track which replicates local roads including traffic and tropical weather conditions such as monsoon rains and localised flooding.

The centre also offers technology developers controlled and safe simulation facilities for a variety of road scenarios including interactions with other road users such as cyclists, pedestrian and aggressive drivers.

The NTU said it already had six autonomous vehicle technology developers booked in to use the centre in the next six months, including start-up company nuTonomy which plans to launch driverless taxis in Singapore next year.
