Initial quality of new vehicles has improved in Thailand, with new-vehicle owners reporting an average of 239 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) compared to 250 PP100 in 2003, according to the latest JD Power Asia Pacific 2004 Thailand Initial Quality Study.
The study measures 135 problem symptoms covering nine vehicle systems: ride/handling/braking; features/controls; seats; heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC); sound system; vehicle exterior; vehicle interior; engine; and transmission in the first two to six months of ownership.
Similar to the trend observed in 2003, the study finds that pickup truck owners record the least problems (230 PP100), followed by passenger car (245 PP100) and utility vehicle (293 PP100) owners.
Both pickup truck and passenger-car initial quality improves versus 2003 while utility vehicle owners recorded more problems.
Honda models lead the entry midsize car segment with new entrant the Jazz ranking highest. The Jazz registers 242 PP100 and records the fewest number of problems in the HVAC, vehicle exterior, vehicle interior and engine categories. Honda City (251 PP100) and Toyota Vios (310 PP100) follow in the rankings.

Mazda Fighter ranks highest in the extended cab segment with 177 PP100. Isuzu D-Max Spacecab (215 PP100) and Toyota Hilux Tiger (216 PP100) follow.
Isuzu D-Max Cab-4 tops the double cab segment with 210 PP100, followed by Isuzu D-Max Hi-Lander (310 PP100) and Toyota Sport Cruiser (316 PP100). Overall, double cab owners report more problems (by at least 34 PP100) compared to owners of single and extended cab pickup vehicles; especially in the HVAC and sound system categories.
The study finds that one-in-four customers who do not experience an initial quality problem with their new vehicle rate the overall ownership experience a 10 on a 10-point scale. In contrast, fewer than one in 10 vehicle owners experiencing five or more problems are delighted with the ownership experience.
