Mercedes-Benz sales in China grew 50% to about 5,100 units last month, trailing BMW by just a few hundred units, according to Reuters.

Zetsche said Mercedes-Benz had been China’s fastest-growing luxury car brand for the past three years.

His comments came after Daimler’s head of northeastern Asia, Ulrich Walker, told Financial Times Deutschland on Sunday that the Chinese government’s economic stimulus plan was causing a rising demand for luxury models.

“The programme supports the construction sector, share prices are rising and all that has a direct impact on our clients,” he said.

Mercedes-Benz unveiled an updated S-class flagship line and the redesigned E-class in Shanghai today.

The S-class sells better in China than in the US, Walker told the FTD.
