Chevrolet’s new Malibu, designed in Korea to replace the current US model of the same one as well as the GM-Daewoo Epica, will be sold as a Holden in Australia, where it will slot in between the just-launched ‘Series II’ locally built Cruze and indigenous Commodore.

The Australian GM unit is one of many already enthusiastic about the new model, unveiled in Shanghai, the US and Canada, which will eventually be sold in up to 100 countries.

“We think it will really hit the mark,” said Holden sales chief John Elsworth. “From the Camaro-inspired exterior design and sleek interior to the dynamic performance capabilities, it is another great example of the sophistication we’re building into our new-generation global vehicles.

“We’ll offer high-performing fuel-efficient engines, a high level of safety and a range of features and technologies to appeal to customers in the competitive mid-size segment.”

GM Canada chief Kevin Williams was also enthusiastic. “The current Malibu successfully redefined expectations for Chevrolet cars by delivering a segment leader and award winner,” he said. “This all-new Malibu further builds on the transformation underway at Chevrolet through a winning combination of dynamic styling, superior handling, outstanding fuel efficiency and leading safety features.”

North American versions, to be made in Fairfax, Kansas and Detroit-Hamtramck, Michigan, will have a 2.5-litre I4 petrol engine and six-speed automatic and will launch as 2013 model year cars.

Chinese versions, on sale later this year, have two- and 2.4-litre petrol engines with a two-litre diesel expected to be available later in other markets. Holden’s version will be on sale in 2012 but engine details have not been announced.

The new Malibu is expected to be sold in Europe but UK sales have not been confirmed; sedans are not popular and the lack of a diesel at launch would be a problem.
