Russia’s economic development and trade minister, German Gref, has said that Russia will not enter into new agreements with global vehicle makers to set up assembly plants in the country after it joins the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Last year Russia introduced new tariffs on imports of components for assembly in Russia, and as a result it is now reported in local press to be in discussion with up to 10 vehicle manufacturers about establishing assembly plants in the country.
The current import tariffs would not be permissible under WTO rules, although companies that set up plants before Russia becomes a member would still benefit from the favourable import terms.
