Nissan Motor is considering building an assembly plant in Russia, business daily Vedomosti reported on Friday, citing a source close to the car maker.

Nissan is looking for locations for the plant, the source said. One possible location is the Nizhny Novgorod region. A Nissan delegation visited the region’s Bor District on Thursday.
Two weeks ago Nissan representatives met with Nizhny Novgorod governor Valery Shantsev, the governor’s press secretary Evgeny Muravyev told Vedomosti.
Earlier, the Prime-Tass news agency noted, Nissan said that it was considering three possible assembly options. These included setting up a joint venture with a Russian company, probably RusPromAvto, building its own plant in Russia, or assembling vehicles at Avtoframos facilities, a joint venture of the Moscow city government and Renault.
In 2004 Nissan’s total sales in Russia amounted to 28,423 vehicles.
