BMW has started assembling X5 and X6 SUVs at the Avtotor plant in the Russian city of Kaliningrad, an Avtotor spokesman told Prime-Tass.

Avtotor plans to annually build up to 1,000 units of each model, Avtotor’s CEO Valery Gorbunov told reporters.

It already assembles the 3- and 5 series and X3 models.

In 2009, Avtotor plans to produce at least 6,500 BMWs, Gorbunov added. Of the total, 2,253 have been already built.

In January-June, BMW sold 7,829 vehicles in Russia.
