Mitsubishi Motors plans to almost triple the annual production of Outlander off-road vehicles to over 40,000 units in Russia by 2012, Itar-Tass reported, citing the Japanese business newspaper Nikkei.

The PSA Peugeot Citroen–Mitsubishi Motors alliance assembly plant in Russia’s Kaluga region currently assembles up to 15,000 Outlander vehicles per year from assembly kits supplied from Japan but Mitsubishi Motors plans to switch to producing the components in Russia, the newspaper reported.

The automaker also plans to increase Outlander exports to Russia to 130,000 units in 2015 from about 40,000 vehicles in 2009 given the expected increase in demand for off-road vehicles in Russia, the paper added.
