Toyota Motor, the Russian subsidiary of Japan’s largest car manufacturer Toyota Motor Corporation, said Tuesday it planned on March 31 to start selling Toyota Camry cars assembled in Russia.

Prime-Tass reported that Toyota produces Camry cars at its plant in St. Petersburg, which was launched at the end of December.


Russia-made Camry cars will retail from 790,000 rubles, down 9% on average from the price of imported Camry cars, Toyota Motor reportedly said.


In 2007, Toyota sold 26,358 Camry cars in Russia, up 45.63% on the year.


Toyota’s total sales in Russia in 2007 amounted to 157,000 cars.


Some vehicle manufacturers now sell more cars in Russia than in any other European country. Russia is now the largest European market for Toyota (and the only ‘European’ market in which it sells the Camry), Nissan, Mitsubishi, Hyundai and Kia, plus Chevrolet.


By 2010 RL Polk expects more than 80% of all new registrations in Russia to be made by foreign brands.
