Following a decision by the Japanese Toyota Motor Corporation to build an assembly plant outside St. Petersburg to produce up to 200,000 cars a year, other Japanese car makers have demonstrated their bid to expand presence in Russia, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Nissan, in particular, wants to open a network of Infiniti shops, focusing on the sales of G35 and M35 sedans. The leadership of the company intends to introduce its luxury car makes in Russia even earlier than in Japan, Japan’s leading economic newspaper Nihon Keizai reported on Thursday, according to the news agency.

From April 2004 to March 2005, Nissan sold in Russia over 20,000 vehicles, twice as much as during the same period a year earlier. Now the company is considering launching production in Russia, possibly in cooperation with its strategic partner Renault.

As for Mazda, it is expected to set up its own sales company in Moscow already in this financial year. Last year the amount of its sales in Russia increased fivefold, reaching 8,500 cars.

Mazda will cooperate in Russia with its partner Ford, and does not rule out the assembly of its cars at the Ford’s plant in Russia. Mitsubishi Motors intends to import into Russia its Galant vehicles from a plant in the US state of Illinois, the newspaper reported.
