The Russian government is expecting car production to rise to between 1.5 and 1.6m units by 2009, reported the Prime-TASS news agency.


The Economic Development and Trade Ministry has forecast the increase based on the restructuring of AvtoVAZ and GAZ. Output in 2005 was 1.068m units.


Economic Development and Trade Minister German Gref added that he expects ten vehicle manufacturers to build plants in Russia in the near future. Currently Ford and Renault assemble cars. Toyota is building a plant, and Volkswagen, DaimlerChrysler and Great Wall have announced plans to set up plants.
