The GM-AvtoVAZ joint venture in Russia produced 29,656 units in the first half of this year – up 10.5% on last year.
GM-AvtoVAZ also announced that it has sold 29,795 cars in January-June compared with 25,903 cars sold in the same period of 2007. Of the total, 2,573 cars were sold in the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) outside of Russia.
In 2007, GM-AvtoVAZ produced 55,052 automobiles, up 15% on the year, it said earlier. The company sold 54,610 cars in 2007, up 4.3% on the year.
GM-AvtoVAZ was founded by U.S. automaker General Motors (GM), Russian carmaker AvtoVAZ and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). GM-AvtoVAZ started operations in September 2002. It currently produces Chevrolet Niva small SUVs and Chevrolet Viva cars.
While the JV’s long-term future has been thrown into some doubt following AvtoVAZ’s strategic tie-up with Renault, officials at GM and AvtoVAZ have since been keen to stress that it’s business as usual for the operation.
