GM-AvtoVAZ is reported to be moving back to a two-shift working day from today (21 September), as demand in the Russian market continues.
The joint venture between General Motors (GM) and Russian carmaker AvtoVAZ had been running a one-shift workday. The move to increase the shifts was previously announced in June, when the company cited growing demand and an increase in the production plan for 2010 as reasons for its move. The firm currently produces Chevrolet Niva sport utility vehicles.
The depleted Russian car market has sparked into life this year on the back of a scrappage incentive that has lifted sales of domestically produced cars.
The company’s output plummeted in 2009, down by close to 60% on 2008 figures. And, as a result of its decision last year to reduce output, GM-AvtoVAZ laid off about 400 employees.
Local reports today said the joint venture was planning to increase its current staff by more than 300.
