Interfax reports that Russian carmaker Avtovaz plans to increase automobile exports by almost 8% year-on-year in 2002. The company’s press service quoted Vice President for Marketing and Sales Vladimir Kuchai as saying that the company will export about 95,000 VAZ vehicles in 2002.

Avtovaz exported 88,000 vehicles in 2001.

According to the Interfax report, Kuchai noted that a sharp increase in exports is not expedient “as the 100% saturation of the domestic market remains a priority for the Volga Automobile Plant.”

According to company information, Avtovaz exports vehicles to 48 countries, half of which have developed economies.

The most popular export models are the VAZ-2110 and the Niva SUV.
