Russia-based auto manufacturing joint venture GM-Avtovaz is developing a new base car model that is expected to be launched after 2009 by Russia’s largest car producer Avtovaz (AVST), Vladimir Kadannikov, chairman of Avtovaz’ board of directors, told the Prime-Tass news agency.

According to Kadannikov, the new model is a front-wheel drive vehicle expected to replace the Lada 2105 and 2107 cars.
The companies are deciding whether to base the model on GM cars or on both Avtovaz and GM models.
Richard Swando, managing director of GM-Avtovaz, on Tuesday said that GM-Avtovaz might decide to launch production of a third car model this year, the report noted.
That followed on from GM-Avtovaz sales and marketing director Konsantin Baishev comments in October last year that the company planned to launch a new model in September 2005.

By GlobalDataGM-Avtovaz currently produces Chevrolet Niva sport-utility vehicles and Chevrolet Viva cars and the joint venture sold 53,986 vehicles last year, Prime-Tass said.
