Delphi will relocate production lines from Spain and France to Romanian city of Iasi, in the northeast, Iasi mayor Gheorghe Nichita reportedly said Wednesday.

The Mediafax report said that Delphi will invest some EUR100m in a diesel injection pump plant in Iasi. The plant will be fully functional by 2012, it added.

“I met with Delphi officials, who told me they want to relocate their production units from Spain and France to Iasi by 2010. They inquired about available land, as well as about access to utilities,” Nichita reportedly told a press conference.

He said Delphi wants to have its suppliers relocated to Iasi as well, in a bid to reduce transportation costs.

Delphi has two other plants in Romania, in localities Ineu and Sînicolau Mare, which employee 9,000 workers.
