Renault’s South Korean subsidiary, Renault Samsung Motors, will be given full responsibility for the development of a new SUV model to be sold across the group, according to local reports in South Korea.
Renault is said to have been encouraged by the success of the new QM6 model, sold as in overseas markets by Renault as the Koleos. Since it was launched in September, sales in South Korea have exceeded 10,000 units.
The current QM6 model was developed by the Renault Samsung Technical Centre in Yongin, in South Korea’s Gyeonggi Province.
The centre, which employs around 1,000 people, is one of five major R&D centres worldwide within Groupe Renault. It has full vehicle development capabilities, from initial design to production models.
Reports this week suggested the South Korean car-making subsidiary will be “fully in charge” of the research and development of the new SUV.
The QM6 is the same vehicle as the Renault Koleos. The Samsung was first seen at the Busan motor show in June 2016, going on sale in South Korea three months later.
