Portuguese new car registrations were down 1.3% in March to 20,847 units, according to the automotive dealers trade association (ACAP), reported Reuters.


In the first three months of the year the market was down 2.4% to 51,916 units.


Market-leader Renault saw its sales grow 5% in the first three months of the year to 7,893 units, giving it a 15.2% market share.


In second place was Opel with a 9.6% market share. However this was down from 11.8% a year ago and its sales were down over 20% to just below 5,000 units.


Peugeot retained third place with a share of 9.13% (sales of 4,740 units), although it did lose some share to Volkswagen which accounted for 8.03% of the market, up from 6.9% a year earlier.
