May new car registrations in Portugal were down 35% to 16,869 compared with 25,972 a year ago, according to Portuguese Auto-Dealers Association (ACAP) figures.
For the five months January to May 2003 inclusive, sales were down 23.7% year on year from 107,136 to 81,717.
Market leader Renault reported January-May sales of 12,492, compared with 14,609 sold in the first five months of 2002.
Peugeot sold 9,695 vs 11,702 in 2002; Opel 7,838 vs 12,094; Volkswagen 7,131 vs 12,348; Citroen 6,521 vs 7,147; Ford 4,627 vs 5,277; Fiat 4,235 vs 7,134; Toyota 3,791 vs 5,476; Mercedes 3,328 vs 3,637 and Seat 2,909 vs 3,425.
