Steering systems supplier Nexteer has said that its Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems are in higher demand as its customers seek efficiency gains and the technology becomes suitable for smaller cars.
The company says it supplies a wide range of OEMs and vehicle types with its EPS products. The range of vehicles fitted ranges from small A-B European segments to full-size pickups and from sports cars to light commercial vehicles, it says. The company has just produced its 30 millionth EPS unit. Nexteer says its EPS is 25% of small cars in Europe that have EPS fitted.

Claimed benefits of EPS include reduced cabin noise levels as well as reduced fuel consumption – as much as 6% (with CO2 emissions down by 8g/km).
Nexteer Automotive has production plants in Tychy and Gliwice in Southern Poland and customer support centres in Paris, Torino in Italy and Russelsheim in Germany. Nexteer OEM customers include BMW, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, General Motors and PSA Peugeot Citroen. Since the start of production, nearly half of the 30m EPS systems sold globally were manufactured in Europe.
The milestone comes shortly after starting the construction of a new facility at Nexteer’s Tychy plant in Poland, a new warehouse area, which is located directly next to the current production plant to make production and material management easier and more efficient. The facility is planned to start operations in Q1 2016. This space also offers the potential of development into a manufacturing plant in the future, Nexteer says.
