Pittsburgh Glass Works says it will provide lightweight glazing technologies for the Ford GT Supercar.

The package uses ultra-lightweight glazing solutions using aluminosilicate and soda-lime laminated hybrid glass constructions, as well as thin, lightweight tempered solutions.

PGW says it was chosen by Ford to be the Tier I supplier for the GT after more than a year of development efforts, which included the installation of capabilities to fabricate aluminosilicate and soda-lime laminated hybrid constructions at its Berea, Ky. manufacturing facility.

The supplier maintains its windscreen application will be the first of its kind in the automotive OEM production market, reducing windscreen weight by more than 30% compared to standard construction.

Combining PGW’s solar control technology with lightweight glazing can reduce air conditioning usage says the supplier.

The US Environmental Protection Agency has established a provision in which the use of certain solar control glazing qualifies OEMs for an off-cycle credit.
