Data released by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc., or Campi, showed that vehicle sales in the Philippines surged 26% in January over last year to 6,960 units.

The rise was due to particularly strong sales of SUVs and other utility vehicles.

Sales of commercial vehicles jumped 46% over last year to 5,106 units, while sales of cars declined 3.6% to 1,854 units.

Analysts said that the market was also pushed by aggressive financing deals, especially by market leader Toyota.
