Ford has started decommissioning its assembly plant in the Philippines following the company’s decision to downgrade its operations in the country into a purely trading operation.

Its main assembly hub for the ASEAN region is now in Thailand. The Philippines factory used to assemble the Lynx sedan and Escape SUV for domestic and export market as well as the Tribute SUV and Protege sedan for export to Thailand and Indonesia.

Ford Philippines president Randy Krieger said the factory land would be sold through a local agent and some 50 ex-workers have been relocated to Ford plants overseas.

Despite the closure, Krieger forecast growth for the market in the Philippines which is expected to hit total sales of 200,000 units this year, up from 184,248 in 2012.

Ford has been strengthening its distribution network nationwide and is on track to open new dealerships in Bohol, General Santos, Laoag, Zamboanga, Manila Bay and Baguio.
