Toyota Motor Europe confirmed on the eve of the Paris show it would build the next generation Avensis model in the UK at Burnaston, Derbyshire, where current and previous models have been made.

Production of the new D-segment model, which made its global public debut in France today, will begin in November and Europe-wide sales start in January.

Transmissions and engines will come both from the UK and continental Europe. Toyota’s plant in Deeside, North Wales, will supply 1.6 & 1.8  petrol engines while the two- and 2.2-litre diesels and a new six-speed manual transmission will come from Poland where gearbox production started recently.

Toyota launched the first generation Avensis in 1997 after five years of building the Carina II (Corona in other markets) with which it began UK car production. Since launch, around 1.45m Avensis models have been built at Burnaston, near Derby city, and most have been exported, some as far as Japan.

For the new model, Toyota has dropped the five-door hatchback body style and will offer sedan or wagon with four equipment grades.
