Opel and Vauxhall have released the first official images of the next Corsa, ahead of the car’s global debut at October’s Paris motor show.

The new car, which will again be available with three or five doors, uses an extensively overhauled platform rather than an all-new architecture. As per the current model, it will be manufactured at GM’s Zaragoza and Eisenach plants.

According to the information released to the media, “the chassis does not inherit a single component from the current Corsa”, and steering response is said to be improved, with less understeer – some have criticised the dynamics of the existing, now eight years old model. There is also a new electrical architecture, and speed-sensitive electric power steering.

The main powertrain news is GM’s new direct injection turbo 1.0-litre petrol engine. This three-cylinder aluminium engine, which is about debut in the Adam, will be fitted to special ‘Corsa E’ variants with the choice of two outputs: 66kW (90hp) or 85kW (115hp). These cars will also have standard stop-start and, as in the Adam, a new six-speed manual gearbox.

Other petrol engines include a 74kW (100hp) 1.4 turbo as well as naturally aspirated 1.2- and 1.4-litre units. The 1,248cc ‘1.3 CDTi’ diesel has also been updated for the new model, and it appears in 55kW (75hp) and 70kW (95hp) forms. All are Euro 6-compliant. Additional low emissions engines will follow in the spring of 2015.

As well as the six-speed manual transmission, new six-speed automatic and Easytronic 3.0 automated manual gearboxes will be available for certain model variants.

Highlights of the new interior include a 7-inch colour touchscreen located on the centre stack for the Intellilink infotainment system, as well as FlexDock parking and a charging station for smartphones. The touchscreen can be controlled via apps such as BringGo (for navigation), Stitcher and TuneIn (for global radio channels and internet podcasts).

The new model introduces a host of driver assistance systems, including new systems that are all available in the Corsa for the first time:

  • bi-xenon headlamps with cornering light
  • Side Blind Spot Alert and the Opel Eye front camera with Road Sign Recognition
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • High Beam Assist
  • Following Distance Indication and Forward Collision Warning

Left-hand drive versions of the fifth generation Opel Corsa are due to commence in November/December, with cars for the UK and Ireland to follow in either December or January. Pricing has not been announced.

The next Corsa is especially important for Vauxhall, given that in 2013, some 83,000 units of the current model were sold. Germany was the number two market last year, with around 50,000 cars registered there.

[15:49 – additional text] Codenamed 4500, this new car is expected to go without a mid-life facelift and instead be replaced in 2018, a reliable source has told just-auto.com. An all-new design will reportedly be developed by Opel under the 4600 project code. This follows the cancellation of PSA and GM’s once-proposed alliance for B segment cars.
