Japan's Panasonic Corporation has agreed to supply Honda Motor with lithium-ion batteries for forthcoming battery powered scooters and compact vehicles.
Panasonic sees its global partnership with Honda as crucial to remaining competitive in the lithium-ion battery segment.
Initially, Panasonic will supply removable and interchangeable battery packs, called Honda Mobile Power Pack, to the automaker for its forthcoming PCX two-wheeled electric scooter.
In December, the company will begin trials of the new battery packs on motorcycles in Indonesia, which is Honda's largest two-wheeler market worldwide. Here they will evaluate the practicality of interchangeable and portable battery packs.
Panasonic is eyeing the additional flexibility of portable battery packs, which can double up as residential energy storage units.
Honda and Panasonic also plan to test the Mobile Power Pack system on a version of its two-seater off-road concept vehicle displayed at CES 2018 Show in Las Vegas in January. These too have multiple removable battery packs.
