New Zealand's Motor Industry Association said November 2019 registrations were 3.5% lower year on year with 13,850 vehicles sold.

"Year to date the market is down 4.7% [to 143,353] which confirms our expectation that the market for 2019 will be down approximately 5% on 2018 volumes," said CEO David Crawford.

November reflected "a steady but slightly weaker market compared to 2018".

Electrification is making progress. Pure electric vehicles continued their modest rate of monthly registrations at 147 units for November, with 84 PHEVs and 591 hybrid vehicles sold last month. 

Registration of 9,640 passenger and SUVs for November 2019 was up 1.06% year on year while commercial vehicle registrations of 4,210 fell 12.6%.

The top models last month of November were the Ford Ranger (907 units), followed by the Toyota RAV4 (881) with the Toyota Corolla bumped back to third place (658 units).

Toyota remained overall market leader with 22% market share (3,110 units), followed by Ford (10%; 1,360 units) and Mitsubishi (8%; 1,042). 

Toyota also topped passenger and SUV registrations with 23% market share (2,171 units) followed by Kia with 9% (884 units) and Holden with 8% market share (724 units).

The top selling passenger and SUV models for the month were the RAV4 (881 units) followed by the Corolla (658) and the new Kia Seltos (400).

Ford regained commercials market lead with 24% share (994 units) followed by Toyota (22%; 939) and Mitsubishi (9%; 394 units).

The Ford Ranger remained the bestselling commercial model with 22% share (907 units) followed by the Toyota Hilux (15%; 648) and the Mitsubishi Triton (9%; 392). 

Smaller vehicles dominated the market in November, the MIA said.

The top three segments were again SUV medium vehicles with 20% share followed by SUV Compact (17%) and Pick Up/Chassis 4×4 (14%).
