Nissan’s US unit said it was introducing Safety Shield 360, six active safety and driver assist items, as standard equipment on all of its top selling models by 2021, about 1m vehicles a year.
The package, which includes front, side and rear sensing technology, will be introduced first as standard on SV and SL grades of the upcoming 2019 Rogue, Rogue Sport and just-redesigned Altima, on sale this autumn.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), cross traffic alert reduces crashes by 22%; the combination of rearview cameras and sensors reduces crashes by 42%; and adding rear emergency braking reduces reversing crashes by 78% compared with vehicles with none of these features.
The package includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Assist, Side Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Automatic Braking.
Nissan is also rolling out ProPILOT Assist on some models which reduces the amount of driver acceleration, steering and braking input under some driving conditions during single lane highway driving.
Nissan said it was the foundation for future automated, helping cars stay centered in lane, navigate stop and start traffic, maintain a set vehicle speed and maintain a set distance from the vehicle ahead. The package is available in the US on the 2018 Rogue and Leaf (on which, in UK conditions, just-auto has found it to work very well).
