Nissan Motor appointed Renault's new chairman Jean-Dominique Senard as a company director during a board meeting held on Tuesday, according to local reports in Japan.

The French automaker is Nissan's largest shareholder with a 43.6% stake while Nissan owns 15% of Renault. Senard recently moved from his position as chairman of French tyre manufacturer Michelin to replace Carlos Ghosn as chairman of Renault, following the latter's resignation after he was arrested in Japan last November over allegations of financial malpractice.

Nissan also said it would hold an extraordinary shareholders' meeting on 8 April to formally remove Carlos Ghosn as chairman after he was recently dismissed as chairman of smaller alliance partner Mitsubishi Motors. It will also seek shareholders' approval to dismiss Greg Kelly, who was arrested at the same time as Ghosn for alleged financial misconduct, from the board.

Nissan has not said whether Senard is being considered to replace Ghosn as chairman.

Ghosn, who is in his third month of detention in Japan, has maintained his innocence throughout – claiming all financial transactions were sanctioned by the company's legal department.

A special committee has also been formed by Nissan to draw up proposals to strengthen corporate governance by the end of March.
