February 2014 was another record month – the fifth in a row – for sales of commercial vehicles in New Zealand, according to the Motor Industry Association.

Total new vehicle registrations rose 14% to 9,058.

New commercial vehicle registrations rose 19.2% to 2,567 units, a record for the month since the MIA began collecting records in 1981. New passenger car sales totalled 6,491 registrations, the best February since 1989.

Toyota was the overall market leader for the month of February with a 15% share (1,363 units) with General Motors’ Holden second (10.5%; 949) and Ford third (9.9%; 894).

Holden was the passenger car market leader in February with a 12% share (782), with Toyota second on 11.7% (762) and Hyundai third with 9.5% (616).

The Toyota Corolla remained the top selling passenger model with 5% market share (311 units), followed by Holden’s Captiva (4%; 279) and the Suzuki Swift (3%; 226). The Holden Commodore and Hyundai Santa Fe were the next best-selling models, each also with 3% of market share.

The Toyota Hilux was the top selling commercial model for February with 390 units sold (15% share). The Ford Ranger was the second best seller (12%; 311).  This was followed by the Nissan Navara with 11% (272). Year to date the Ford Ranger was the top selling commercial model with 13% share (624) closely followed by the Hilux, also with 13% market share (621).

Sports utility vehicles accounted for 31% of all vehicles sales in January, followed by pick-ups/chassis-cabs and small passenger cars at 19% each.
