New vehicle sales remained healthy in New Zealand last month with the model sales chart topped by three pickup truck lines.

According to David Crawford, chief executive officer of the Motor Industry Association, April registrations of 2,915 new commercial vehicles was the strongest tally for the month on record.

Adding 6,375 new passenger vehicle registrations gave a combined total of 9,290 units, the best April result since 1989. April registrations were up 6% (561 units) on April 2014.  Year to date the market was up 7% (2,955 units) to 42,545. 

Toyota was the overall market leader last month with 15% market share (1,414 units) followed by Ford (12%; 1,075 units) and Holden (9%; 839 units).

Toyota also remained the market leader for passenger vehicles with 12% market share (794 units), followed by Mazda (9%; 598 units) and Hyundai (9%; 587 units). The Corolla was the top selling passenger vehicle followed by the Suzuki Swift and Hyundai IX35.

Year to date (12,063) the commercial sector is 13.6% (1,449 units) ahead of 2014.  Toyota was also commercial market leader in April with 21% market share followed by Ford and Nissan. The Ford Ranger regained its place as top selling commercial model for April with 17% market share by archrival Toyota Hilux and the Nissan Navara. Year to date, the Ranger is the top selling commercial model followed by the Hilux.

The top three best selling models in April were all light commercial vehicles – Ranger, Hilux and Navara with 347 units. The Toyota Corolla was fourth and the top selling passenger car.

The sports utility vehicles segment remains dominant, reflecting international trends, with 31% market share in April followed by pick-ups/chassis-cabs (22%) and light passenger cars (15%).
