Registrations of 11,755 passenger and commercial vehicles resulted in the strongest March for New Zealand’s new vehicle importers since 1984. Sales were up 5% on March 2014 and 8% year to date. 

Toyota was the overall market leader with 15% market share followed by General Motors’ Holden with 10% and Ford with 9% market share.

New registrations of 8,075 passenger vehicles last month were 81 units higher than in March 2014, and the best result for the month since 1984. Toyota topped passenger vehicle sales with 12% market share followed by Holden (10%) and Mazda (9%).

The Toyota Corolla was the top selling passenger vehicle followed by the Suzuki Swift and redesigned Honda Jazz.

New registrations of commercial vehicles for the month of March were 436 units higher than for March 2014 and the highest for the month since 1982.

Toyota led with 22% market share followed by Ford (17%) and Holden (10%).

The Toyota Hilux was once again the top selling commercial model followed by the Ford Ranger and Holden Colorado.  Year to date, the Ranger is the top seller followed closely by its arch rival Hilux.

The sports utility vehicle segment remained dominant, reflecting international trends, with 31% market share followed by pick-ups/chassis-cabs (22%) and passenger cars (15%).

“New vehicle registrations for 2015 continue to reflect a strong economy which is reflected in the continuing strong performance in the light commercial vehicle sector,” said David Crawford, CEO of the Motor Industry Association importers trade group.
