New vehicle sales in New Zealand rose 13% year on year.

Total new car sales of 4,844, were led by Toyota which took just over 16% of the market with 785 registrations. Hyundai (548) and Suzuki (468) both recorded strong sales taking out second and third spots respectively; Hyundai accounting for 11.3% of the market and Suzuki 9.6%.

This strong showing was reflected in the individual models table with the Suzuki Swift the top selling model for the month (351), followed by the Hyundai i30 (310), with the Toyota Corolla in third spot with (212). These registrations were not influenced at all by rental fleet sales.

“February sales numbers are traditionally down on January and this year is no exception” said Motor Industry Association CEO Perry Kerr. “The strong showing in January has continued across to February with new car registrations up 12.6% on February 2010, with commercials running 15% ahead of last year [at 1,560],” he said.

For commercial vehicles, the top six places remained unchanged – Toyota leading, followed by Ford, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Holden and Mazda – these places mirror full year 2010 registrations.  In the commercial sector the top selling model was again the Toyota Hilux (339) followed by the Nissan Navara (182) and Ford Ranger (143).
