February new vehicle registrations in New Zealand of 7,946 were up 10.6% (761 units) on February 2012 (7,185).  Commercial vehicle registrations of 2,148 units were up a noteworthy 38.4% (596 units) on February 2012 and the highest monthly February sales since 1982.  Passenger car registrations of 5,798 were up 163 units (2.9%) on February 2012.

David Crawford, the new chief executive ifficer of the Motor Industry Association (MIA) said: “This result shows the new vehicle market is consistent with levels of sales before the global financial crisis.  The commercial vehicle registrations of 2,148 units are particularly pleasing, being only the fourth time since 1981 sales exceeded 2,000 units (previous times were 1982, 1984 and 2008)”.

Toyota remained the market leader taking 18.4% of total registrations with 1,465 sales (926 passenger cars and 539 commercials).  Ford was second overall with 755 and Nissan third with 620.  Hyundai was second in the passenger car segment with 541 registrations followed by Holden with 492.

The top selling passenger car model for the month was the Toyota Corolla with 366 registrations followed by the Suzuki Swift with 263 and the Volkswagen Golf with 144.  In the commercial segment the Toyota Hilux was the top selling model with 338 registrations, followed by the Ford Ranger with 298 and Nissan Navara with 235.

For the month the SUV segment remained the most popular with 25.5% of total registrations.  This was followed by the small car segment with 18.5% and the pickup/chassis cab segment showing the strong growth for the month in commercial vehicle sales.
