Registrations of 3,106 new commercial vehicles in August reflected continued strong demand and was the best result for the month since the local Motor Industry Association began collecting records for this type of vehicle.
Year to date sales rose 21% and the MIA is forecasting 36,000 units for the full year, some 5,000 units above 2013 and 13,000 units above 2012.
August sales of 10,189 new passenger and commercial vehicles were up 8% year on year for the best August tally since 1984.
The Ford Ranger was the top selling new vehicle model in August with 548 new registrations, followed by the Toyota Corolla (469), the Hilux (413), Holden Commodore (314) and redesigned Honda Jazz (265).
Passenger vehicle sales rose 3.7% to 7,083 in August and year to date were up 9.6%.
Toyota was the overall market leader for the month of August with 18% market share followed by Ford and Holden (both 11%).
