New car sales were 13.6% higher than in April 2007 and new commercial vehicle sales were 16.8% ahead of the same month last year.
Car sales reached 5,551 and 2,022 new commercial vehicles were delivered.
“New vehicle dealers continue to do very good business,” said Motor Industry Association CEO Perry Kerr.
“This was the best April for new commercial vehicle sales for 26 years, and the best April for new car sales since 1990. The first four months of the year have produced 5.8% more new car sales than the same period last year, and for new commercial vehicle sales the increase is 10.7%.”
Toyota continued to lead the market for both cars and commercial vehicles, and in April Hyundai achieved a surprise second place for new car sales.
