Despite Easter, an additional public holiday later in the month and school holidays, new vehicle registrations in New Zealand in April 2014 remained strong with sales up 7% year on year to 8,729 units, the bet result for the month since 1982.
Year to date volume was up 13% (4,746 units) to 39,588.
Passenger vehicle sales rose 4% to 6,151 last month and by 12% (3,119 units) to 28,982 year to date.
Commercial vehicle registrations rose 15% to 2,578 units in April and were up 18% (1,628 units) to 10,606 YTD.
Toyota was overall leader in April with 16% market share (1,384 units) with Ford second on 11% (985 units) and GM’s Holden third with 10% (915 units).
Toyota was also the passenger car market leader for April with a 12% share (765 units), with Holden second on 11% (662 units) and Hyundai third with 9% (571 units).

The Ford Ranger was the top selling commercial model for April with 513 units sold (20% market share). The Toyota Hilux was the second best seller with 15% market share (377 units). This was followed by the Holden Colorado with 9% (231 units).
Year to date the Ranger was the top selling commercial model with 16% market share (1,684 units) followed by the Hilux, with 14% market share (1,503 units), 181 fewer than the Ranger.
Sale of sports utility vehicles grew to 30% of all vehicles sales in April, followed by pick-ups/chassis-cabs with 21% and small passenger cars at 19%.
