The New Zealand new passenger car market continued to perform strongly in April with registrations of 5,430 up 27.5% (1,172 units) year on year, the Motor Industry Association (MIA) said.

Year to date sales were up 17.2% to 25,061 units. Commercial vehicle sales were also strong, up 19.7% to 1,618 registrations. Year to date sales were down 25 units on 2011 to 6,381.

“The strong showing this month of the new car market can in part be explained by low sales last April as a result of the impact of the March Japanese earthquake and tsunami,” said MIA CEO Perry Kerr. “That said, the market is performing better than we forecast at the beginning of the year. MIA members and their dealers are very happy at the strong performance we are seeing from the new vehicle market.”

Toyota, as usual, led in all sectors for a total of 1,205 registrations. GM’s Holden was second best passenger car player with 550 registrations, just four units ahead of Hyundai (546). Year to date, Hyundai was second (2,620), ahead of Holden (2,603).

The top selling passenger car model in April was the Suzuki Swift (228) followed by the Toyota Corolla (218) and the new Mazda CX5 (179).  The Corolla remained top seller year to date (1,506) followed by the Swift (1,169) and Hyundai i30 (853).
