Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is to develop an export version of its US-built Galant, aimed at selected markets throughout the world.

Developed by MMC´s Car Research & Development Centre in Japan and Mitsubishi R&D of America in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the car will be built at Mitsubishi Motors North America’s plant in Normal, Illinois.

Start of production is scheduled for July 2006 and 15,000 units a year will reach customers in Russia, the Ukraine, and the Middle East – good markets for rival Toyota’s Camry, incidentally.

MMC’s Russian arm was a prime mover for this project. Sales of 55,148 units (+84%) in calendar year 2005 by local distributor Rolf Holding made Russia Mitsubishi Motors Europe´s top market.

Based on the 2007 North American Galant, the export version of the 4,865m long front-wheel-drive four-door sedan will have a Euro 4-compliant 2.4 litre four cylinder engine developing 116kW (158ps), and electronically-controlled four-speed automatic gearbox with sequential mode.
