Heavy duty truck maker DAF has proclaimed that 2005 was a record year for production, sales and market share. The Dutch-based unit of PACCAR said that production in 2005 hit 52,500 units in 2005 – an all-time high – taking DAF’s market share in western Europe to almost 14% in the over 15 tonnes GVW segment.
Aad Goudriaan, president of DAF Trucks N.V. said: “2005 has been a great year for DAF Trucks. A lot has been accomplished, targets have been exceeded and records have been achieved in sales and production numbers as well as in market share. 2005 was a year which every DAF employee, our dealers and their employees and our suppliers can be extremely proud.”
DAF Trucks produced a record number of over 41,200 CF and XF models last year. Together with 11,300 Leyland-produced LF series, an all time high of over 52,500 DAF trucks were produced in 2005. DAF’s market share in Western Europe reached 13.7% in the over 15 tonnes segment and 9.4% in the 6 to 15 tonnes segment.
DAF also said that it has invested more in products and facilities in 2005 than it ever has before. In 2005 the new engine plant was finalised and DAF claims it has the most modern engine plant in the industry.
In a growing western European truck market DAF said that it increased its market share in 2005 for the fifth consecutive year, both in the light and in the heavy segments. According to what it said is the latest available market information, the 6 to 15 tonnes Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) truck market in western Europe reached a volume of 77,000 registrations in 2005 (2004: 75,000). DAF Trucks said it achieved a market share of 9.4%, compared with 8.9% in 2004 in this segment.

By GlobalDataDAF said that the heavy duty truck market (exceeding 15 tonnes GVW) in western Europe totalled around 259,000 registrations last year (2004: 238,000) and exceeded the record year of 2000, when 252,000 heavy trucks were registered.
“Together with our sales units and our dealers, we achieved a record market share in a record market,” DAF’s Marketing & Sales director Kerry McDonagh said. “According to the currently available market information, we have achieved a market share of 13.7% in the over 15 ton segment, almost a full percent growth compared with 2004, when we reached 12.9%; a tremendous achievement of the whole of our organization and a clear recognition of the class-leading quality of our products and services.”
“Our growth in markets like Germany, France, Italy and Spain, is of crucial importance for our geographical spread of sales,” McDonagh said. “Ten years ago, our traditional markets, the United Kingdom and the Benelux, accounted for about three quarters of our total sales in Western Europe. Only around 20% of our production went to Germany and Southern Europe. Today we still have a strong and even improved position in our traditional markets, but Germany, France, Italy and Spain now account for a share of 42% of our total West European sales.
“And also in markets outside Western Europe, including Central and Eastern European countries and international markets such as Australia, New Zeeland, South Africa and markets in the Middle East, we have further enhanced our presence,” he added.
In total, DAF delivered a record number of over 41,200 CF and XF models last year (2004: 35,400) and 11,300 LF’s (2004: 10,000).
“With the new XF105, offering great transport efficiency to the operator and superb comfort and driving pleasure to the driver, the successful XF95, the CF and the LF series, DAF has the most modern product range on the market,” Aad Goudriaan said.
“With this class-leading product range and with the top quality services and the first class dealer network we have a great opportunity to further enhance our market share in the years to come in the same sustainable way we have done in the past five years.”
