Samsung SDI has unveiled its high-energy density battery cell with a driving range of up to 600km, which it maintains can fast-charge electric vehicles in 20min, as well as an integrated battery module concept with a 10% decrease in component units and weight compared to current models.
The supplier showcased its technology at this week’s NAIAS in Detroit, noting the 20min charge would allow up to 500km driving, “eliminating range anxiety,” with mass production slated for 2021.
In addition, Samsung SDI is exhibiting its integrated battery module. A conventional EV battery module, which consists of 12 cells has a capacity of 2-3kWh, whereas an integrated battery module has more than 24 cells with a higher capacity of 6-8kWh.
“The high-energy density battery cell with the fast charging capability and the integrated battery module are innovative technologies with potentials that can transform the market,” said an unnamed SDI spokesman.
“Expectations are high we will be able to accelerate vehicle electrification utilising these technologies with improved driving range, manufacturing efficiency and user convenience.”
Samsung SDI also showcased its line-up of 12V, 48V Low Voltage Systems (LVS) in Detroit, as well as the 21700 cylindrical battery cell model with improved energy density, power and performance.
