Mexico is poised to overtake Japan and Canada as the largest exporter of vehicles to the USA.
Estimates by IHS Automotive suggest that by 2015 Mexico will export 1.9m vehicles north, beating the 1.87m that analysts expect Canada to send south, the Bloomberg news agency reported.
This year, Mexico with 1.69m exports will overtake Japan as new plants built by Honda, Nissan and Mazda come on stream. Exports from Japan are estimated to reach 1.51m.
The new plants will add 600,000 units of annual capacity. IHS Automotive estimates that by 2018, Mexico’s total output will reach 4m units. Last year it produced 2.93m vehicles.
