General Motors is halting its assembly lines in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, for seven weeks from 1 July to 21 August due to weak demand for the Chevrolet Aveo and Pontiac G3 models the plant builds.
A two-week summer furlough is normal, a Dow Jones report noted.
Three of the extra four weeks of closure will, however, be used for employee training and workers will get their full salary during those weeks, a GM spokeswoman told the news agency. Employees would take about three of the weeks off, and the company would distribute the associated pay cut over the rest of the year.
GM’s three other Mexican vehicle plants will continue to operate as usual.
