The Mexican auto industry was in rude health in August as higher demand from the US boosted exports and output.

According to figures from the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA), production was up 19.5% to 179,527 units in the month. Exports leapt 38.2% to 136,114 cars.

Cesar Flores, the head of AMIA, called on Mexican President-elect Felipe Calderon to keep the economy stable so the momentum can be maintained. He also called for an improvement in the country’s infrastructure.

“The big challenge is competitiveness … infrastructure is the same as competitiveness,” he told a news conference.
