Mexico’s car industry produced about 1.774 million vehicles last year, down 2.4% from 2001, while exports fell 6.5% to 1.312 million units, Reuters reported, citing the Mexican Automotive Industry Association.

“Our production fell 2.4%, reflecting the decline in our main export markets … because our leading customers the United States and Canada had lower rates of economic growth,” AMIA’s president, Cesar Flores, said in a news conference, according to Reuters.

Mexico, which manufactured 1.82 million cars in 2001, is the 10th largest producer in the world and major companies building there include General Motors, Ford, Volkswagen and DaimlerChrysler, the report noted.
